Profile

The best thing about walking into John Masters Organics has to be the smell—a delectable mix of organic herbs, fruits, and oils that comprise Masters’ award-winning, all-natural hair and skincare product line. What began as a modest three-chair salon in 1994 has evolved into a bustling ten-chair operation, and the only clean-air salon in the city—which means they use no harsh chemical treatments, like perms or relaxers. Full-length antique mirrors, hardwood floors, a rock waterfall, and the intoxicating smell of Masters’ products impart a sense of laid-back charm, not unlike the man himself, who can often be seen working the busy floor. After being greeted by the resident pup, clients change into oversized cotton t-shirts before settling into a relaxing scalp massage and wash. The diverse team of stylists, all of whom specialize in both cuts and color, have been handpicked from top salons throughout the US and Europe. All hair color is herb- or clay-based and ammonia-free, ideal for expecting moms and clients with sensitive skin. The 45-minute Shiatsu Scalp & Hair Treatment includes an amazing head-neck-shoulder massage, essential oil application, and hair steam; it leaves tresses feeling restored and luxurious, and smelling great.

Extra

Masters’ dog, Maya, is usually on hand to keep clients charmed; her soft, fragrant fur is a testament to the results of her owner’s all-natural canine shampoo, Amber’s Organic Lavender Doggiewash.

The best haircuts of my life, I got here. I tried the JM products around 2001 (?) and became hooked. Since I'm only a couple of hours from the salon, I decided to try out their salon services. It began with the most amazing hair washing which included cucumber slices on my eyes and an intense scalp massage with the wonderful lavender and avocado conditioner that I've used at home for countless years. Rod's mannerisms suit me perfectly, not fakely chatty or anything (my pet peeve), and he really concentrates on what he is doing. He gives me exactly what I want and more, every time. The staff is non-pretentious and includes the sweetest Golden Retriever you'll ever meet. It's not the most expensive salon in New York, but certainly something I have to budget for considering that for me I have to factor in a $20 train ride and a tip that I feel is appropriate for the best haircut of my life, every time.
