Profile
Nestled on a block composed of Fashion Institute of Technology buildings, this clean, modern salon offers flawless service to a fanatically loyal clientele. Simple, minimalist décor isn’t without frills (drinks and candy are provided to sustain customers through sittings that last upwards of three hours), but the focus here is hair, not atmosphere. The instantly likable staff includes a team of three hyperattentive Japanese-born and trained stylists (really, stylists-perfectionists) who, via the receptionist/translator, listen carefully, offer realistic advice, and explain their precise process along the way. Meticulous cuts (and their practically sleep-inducing scalp and shoulder massage with shampoo) are only the beginning of the shop’s full range of cutting, coloring, perming, styling services, and special treatments, which almost exclusively employ Japanese hair products. The digital perm (a body-wave perm achieved with rollers connected to a digital heating machine), which lasts three to eight months depending on hair’s texture, also attracts a large following. Free consultations are readily provided with appointments.
