Profile

Located at the not-so-evil axis of Soho, Nolita, and Chinatown, Laicale occupies a bright, vast, pseudo-industrial space that pops with a loud alternative soundtrack. Contrary to first impressions, however, the salon’s vibe is warm and obliging, and its chic, chatty stylists and diverse clientele foster its unique personality and flavor. Descended from a long line of Italian hairdressers, owner Fabrizio Fiumicelli founded the original Laicale in Pisa, Italy; in 1999, he partnered with New York stylist Simone Saint Laurent to open this branch (as well as one in Osaka, Japan). The salon offers stellar cut and color services for men and women—in addition to blowouts, styling, Japanese straightening, and a head massage with every shampoo—but the real focus is on form, function, and healthy tresses. A destination for so-called “regular” New Yorkers—be it pretty-boy rock stars or corporate squares—the salon’s stylists strive to create ‘dos that fit the individual. A house line of natural, animal-friendly shampoos, conditioners, masks, and styling products enables customers to recreate their expertly coiffed looks at home.

Extra

Local lore has it that the basement of the salon was a whorehouse before the building was renovated.

Sales
Laicale offers twenty percent off regular cut and color combos with mention of this listing. On Thursdays at 8 p.m., the salon holds model classes for their apprentice stylists. Cuts are $30; color is $45 (cash only).

I was given a free consultation with Takako, who was very honest and put no pressure on me for what to do. I returned to get subtle highlights with her and she is incredible. She's very sweet, thoughtful, and immeasurably knowledgeable about hair. I came back recently to get my roots done and to get a haircut - the whole process was seamless. From the past two times, I feel like I could go in and just let her do what she thinks would look best on me, both color and cut-wise, and there's not a doubt in my mind that I'd be happy with the results. The only reason I give an 8 for value is b/c I still think it's a bit ridiculous to charge $90 for a haircut, but I'll absolutely go back forever because I know I'll never be disappointed with Takako's work.

When Kristina starts my consultation, she kept yawning, feels like just got f*cked last night and not waked up yet. when she felt tired , she just said there's not enough time left for me. The cuts were not even, some short, some long, if that's what she learned as "layer", she should get some education. She saw that she didn't do it right, then she blew my hair and curl the ends to cover the uneven. She's the kind that doesn't bother to say anything until you ask or push her. But be aware, she'll become so impatient and simply risk your hair or say you're out of time. When I washed my hair for the first time, it's HORRIBLE!!! It's like a MOP at the ends! It's like some amateur worth the chinatown price but she costs $100. Not only is her skill bad, her attitude and service is the worst. She thought she's some superstar, which turns out to be joker! Be aware of Kristina, unless you wanna get bad hair cut, paying lots of money and feeling like you owe her a life or what.
