The name is no exaggeration: Both Le Petit Spas are snug and sweet spaces—about the size of a shotgun apartment, only decked out in velvet-and-brocade Victorian trappings. Their mission, however, is more expansive. This is evident in the menu of brow shaping, bikini waxing, and ear candling services that are offered on top of the usual facial-and-massage routine. In order to fulfill this one-stop mini-shop approach, each branch houses a bath and beauty boutique stocked with European products and a few relatively more spacious treatment rooms. The newer outpost near the U.N. flaunts a hydrotherapeutic Vichy shower. Face and body treatments, performed chiefly by soft-spoken, nimble-fingered Romanian and Russian estheticians, combine the high-tech (oxygen flows and crystal microdermabrasion) with the hands-on (hot stones and upper-body massages). An array of packages, discounts, and specials attract regulars as well as bridal, sweet sixteen, and bat bitzvah parties. — Karen Tina Harrison
