Profile
There's no shame in Elline Surianello's game when it comes to hair loss: Since 1984, the feisty owner of this custom hairpiece salon for women has inspired those with thinning-hair woes. From fourteen-year-old chemo patients and alopecia-afflicted octogenarians to victims of bad hair weaves, Surianello has seen it all and never blinks an eye. Even after talking candidly about ill-fitting wigs and the improbability of hair re-growth, some are still reluctant to take the hairpiece plunge, often because LeMetric's individually texturized human-hair versions are pricier than fake-strand alternatives. (The salon offers two securing methods: one detachable, the other a more permanent procedure.) But like in those classic "bald-guy" ads, Surianello is not just the owner, but also a client; with a hand flick, she'll show her own before-and-after hair profile, gleefully watching as jaws drop. After revealing her transformations from black-haired beauty to curly-topped cutie, she promises clients the same reclaimed confidence, simply by spending a few hours in her chair. That usually seals the deal, and they soon leave tossing their hair from side to side and planting a kiss on their stylist, knowing that for the next two to four years (a typical hairpiece's life span), it's hair today, hair tomorrow.
ExtraOnce a month, Surianello teaches a two-day class on hair replacement techniques, a good resource for people contemplating her services.
Bridal Hair
Brides of all ages with mildly to severely thinning hair are transformed into lush-maned beauties by owner Elline Surianello's chic answer to a hairpiece, the Grid: a kind of silk toupee with hair woven in just the right places to fill bald spots. After Surianello designs the piece, a trained hairstylist will snap it in (with camouflaged plastic clips), then cut and style.
