Leonard Golino wants to relieve his clients of their hair worries—which is why he pours a glass of wine for everyone who enters his nine-chair salon, and why he makes sure that all of his stylists excel at both cutting and coloring. But it doesn’t stop there: Golino gives every patron his mobile phone number so that they can call him in case of a hair emergency. He also offers a wealth of helpful take-home tips on topics like how to avoid frizz. The salon specializes in easy hair for women—embodied by textured, shoulder-length cuts that are a cinch to style—and natural highlights that accentuate a client’s base color. But about forty percent of the customers are local Chelsea guys, who come in for styles that extend from flamboyant fauxhawks to more conservative buzz cuts. Golino got into the hair business after a decade in the recording industry, so as a result, many of his clients also come from the world of music and the arts—fashion designer Julie Chaiken among them. Jazz standards and lounge music set a relaxed mood in the ebonized-floored, cream-walled salon, which stays open seven days a week to—again—make life a little easier.
