Les Portes de Paris refers to the ancient gates around the ring road of the City of Lights. Walking through the door of this Upper East Side salon does not offer frilly vistas—the interior is unfussy simplicity—but director Marlene Guibor quickly creates wearable hair confections with a delightful French accent. Chic Wintour-esque bobs, Bardot-like blowouts, and whole-head makeovers whereby blondes are transformed into smoldering brunettes are the specialties here. Heed Guibor’s suggestion for deep conditioning—the difference in texture (from crinkly to silken) is palpable. And don’t be unnerved by a moisturizing treatment called “the caviar”—no fish eggs are entailed, just a willingness to let thick cream sit on strands for fifteen minutes. As a rule, Guibor’s cuts are administered in the dry style, allowing stylists to visualize exactly how strands will fall, ensuring precision when putting in perfect wavy layers. The technique works especially well for thick locks by removing weight with accuracy. Multitaskers can request in-chair mani-pedis and do-gooders take note: ten percent of monthly profits go to charity.
Indoor surfing, spinning lovefests, a luxurious pig-placenta facial, and more.
