With its swivel chairs, floor-to-ceiling beige color scheme, and lingering waft of perm chemicals, the Linda Tam Salon has stayed fairly intact since its seventies debut. (Save perhaps for the addition of hair extensions.) The 5,000-square-foot space is more beauty factory than boutique: About a dozen chairs make up the cutting station while an adjacent area is dedicated to color. Nowadays, many older clients also come for hair-replacement services: custom wigs, weaves, extensions, and hairpieces. Tam reserves a few rooms for full-body waxing, and aestheticians use Sothys and MD Formulation products for facials. Although far from cutting-edge, the salon is a reliable spot for a quick manicure or a blowout, too.
