When Lena Makushina opened this spa in 2000, she wasn’t worried about attracting clients: Working at Bliss for six years, she’d built a coterie of fans who she felt confident would follow her to her small, sun-filled space right off Union Square. But within a couple of years, her customer base had grown so much that she was forced to bring in her sister (and fellow esthetician) Olya Piccirillo to help. Now, the pair tend to everyone from downtown models to Russian housewives to male New School students. Although massage, mineral-salt-scrubs, and seaweed body wraps can all be arranged in the two peachy treatment rooms, the sisters are best known for pain-free waxings and exacting facials—more than eighteen varieties. The most invigorating choice on the menu may be the 90-minute organic facial using the Eminence Organic product line from Hungary. The paprika-infused scrubs and masks leave skin tingly and smooth, with a rosiness that lasts for days. — Sarah Gold
