After working for Pierre Michel, John Frieda, and Bumble and Bumble, celebrity colorist Marie Robinson caused a stir by leaving her longtime post as head colorist at Sally Hershberger and setting out on her own. Her airy, 5,000-square-foot salon in the Flatiron, which opened in the spring of 2010, is modern without feeling sterile, with 26 cube-shaped charcoal salon chairs, exposed beams, white walls, and contrasting dark hardwood floors. Robinson, whose in-house team is also made up of Hershberger vets, counts celebs like Rachel McAdams, Natalie Portman, and Anne Hathaway among her clients. She works swiftly, calling out color-swatch names to her assistant like a mad scientist, whipping up combos that work not only with one’s skin tone but hair shape as well. Using foils, or painting on directly (à la Balayage), Robinson creates sun-kissed, face-framing highlights that make clients look like they’ve been to the beach rather than the hair salon.Bridal
Sally Hershberger alum Marie Robinson caters to celeb clients like Michelle Williams and Natalie Portman and is the color director at Clairol, so she knows her stuff. In-salon day-of styling starts at $250.
