Located in a shopping plaza, this gym doesn’t look like much. Take the stairs down to the lower concourse level (or enter through the underground parking lot), however, and you’ll find an enthusiastic neighborhood spot that goes above and beyond the call of duty. Prospective members receive a free two-week trial with access to all amenities. Besides free weights and resistance equipment, there are 80 cardio machines available, including treadmills, rowers, recumbent bikes, and elliptical machines, plus 42-inch TVs to help pass the time while using them. The bright, 25,000 square-foot loft-like space with wooden floors, mirrored walls, and bright green Astroturf (used for weighted sled training), touts a boxing ring for instruction by former champion Glyn Jenkins, and a studio for classes including yoga, zumba, and bellydancing. Matrix emphasizes personal training, with a complimentary fitness assessment and the choice of pro or elite trainers who create custom workouts incorporating nutritional guidance, weight loss, self-defense, and pre and post-natal training if requested. For the budget -conscious, the increasingly popular small group option is ideal, available for groups of two or three.
Besides group personal training, Matrix has a variety of options to make your fitness experience more affordable, including tiered payments and a non-commit monthly billing option.
There's plenty of free off-street parking in the shopping plaza.
The gym is a far walk from the subway, so unless you live in the area or have a car, it’s difficult to access.
