Janet Rufin's Parlor
|
Unlike other male spas, Mortal Man forgoes clubbiness for discretion. Swedish-born, California-raised, and New York–trained owner Anna Augustsson operates in the back of the hair salon Parlor under a one-for-all dictum: “Everyone wants the same thing: to clean up their face or hands or get a good massage,” she says. Clients are greeted with a glass of wine or mineral water, then meet with the therapist for waxing, rub-downs, mint-infused pedicures, and manicures that are finished with an appropriately undetectable matte polish. Augustsson handles the facials herself, often exceeding the allotted time as she deep-cleans, de-zits, and rehydrates with a regime customized to skin type. Apart from those who opt for a couple’s massage, the shop sees only one spagoer at a time. Even so, as Augustsson puts it, “We get the manly men, the Chelsea boys, and everyone in between.”
SalesVarious combination-service packages are available, and series of treatments are discounted by about 20 percent.
