When owner Steven Kank says Nails on 54th is a family business, he's not exaggerating: Kank, who also runs the larger Fifth Avenue Beauty Salon with his wife, has his son in charge of the tanning section there and his daughter managing the hair salon. The no-frills branch at 54th and Lexington, tucked on the second floor of a Midtown office building, focuses on manicures, pedicures, nail wraps, and acrylics, but waxing, facials, and massage options are offered as well. Spare, with mirrored wall sections, AM radio tunes blaring, and intense fluorescent lighting, the atmosphere is a little eighties-generic, but the space is clean and the turnaround is ultra-fast—perfect for ladies who pop in for quick, under-$10 manicures during their lunch hour. The nail technicians are careful and thorough with Essie and OPI polishes, and judging by the steady flow of regulars, the value and efficiency outweigh any lack of decor or questionable music choices.Extra
