This tiny storefront specializes in the lost art of shaving, recalling a time when every man wore a hat and got his whiskers trimmed with a straight razor. But while forties background music, antique barber chairs, crystal chandeliers, and a stocked bar help set the mood, the New York Shaving Company isn't just about channeling the tonsorial parlors of the old days: It turns out that today's man doesn't know much about smoothing his stubble, from shaving in the wrong direction (it causes redness) to using irritating products, so the shop aims to teach good habits, offering a free facial analysis and using all-natural products like rosewater and orange-blossom tonics. Services include both traditional and ultimate shaves (with an added aftershave "mini-facial"), haircuts, head shaves, beard and mustache trimming, and scalp and skin treatments. Products by Taylor of Old Bond Street and Truefitt & Hill line the shelves, along with the store's own English-made badger-hair brushes, straight razors, and safety razors.
