Oleg Kaz’s salon was originally stationed on the bustling outskirts of Herald Square for five years, but the owner and his team of colorist-stylists prefer the newer, cacophony-free location on the Upper West Side. It’s a neighborhood, according to Kaz, that affords a clientele with two hours to spare even if they’re not opting for any of the auxiliary spa services (manicures, pedicures, waxing) offered in the two treatment rooms downstairs. Indeed, color—using L’Oréal products—is what this salon prides itself on: Every appointment includes a consultation from one of the seven specialists on staff or Kaz himself. But if you’re wondering “highlights or lowlights?” while you wait, you may find the answer inadvertently on one of the three flat-screens adorning the exposed-brick walls.
