This studio may be for Pilates purists, but the art galleries and tony shops nearby can make an exercise outing feel like a civilized event. Studio founder and former Alvin Ailey dancer Sharyl Curry knows a thing about both fitness and culture and offers both mat and Reformer work sessions to improve posture and to strengthen the body’s core. Sessions are strictly private in the small space, and the schedule tends to fill quickly. (Women and men train with different movement patterns, generally in 10-week programs.) All instructors have been trained under Romana Kryzanowska, a Pilates virtuoso and student of the technique’s originator, Joseph Pilates. Park East also takes its Pilates mat “business classes” to the cubicles and conference rooms of hardcore office dwellers.
