With black-varnished walls, late-night hours, complimentary booze, and a prime Lower East Side corner abutting Stanton Social, one might easily mistake this glam salon for the neighborhood’s newest cocktail bar. Two Australian cousins opened the first Pimps and Pinups in East London’s edgy Spitalfields district in 2005, and their British manager, John Hoad, expanded into New York in October 2008. He outfitted the roomy space with eight sleek black leather chairs and mirrors framed by bright dressing-room bulbs, mimicking the original London location’s rock-star vibe. While the salon’s three tattoo-covered stylists specialize in choppy, asymmetrical, and cutting-edge cuts—along with pinup-ready bobs and updos—they’re as competent executing simple trims, blowouts, and highlights as they are replicating the eye-catching, multi-toned styles topping their own heads. A dollop of Murray’s pomade creates a properly retro, slick-looking finish.
