With ten types of tanning machines and expert airbrush applicators on site, Manhattan’s six Portofino Sun Centers aim to create the specific tint each customer is after—in a sun-soaked, tropical setting.  Neophytes meet with the trained staff to learn about their options (stand-up or lie-flat, machine or airbrush, et cetera) then choose whichever method is most likely to achieve the desired effect with their type of skin.  And newbies are in good company: Celebs Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Johnny Depp, and George Michael have visited Portofino’s shops to get that just-back-from-St.-Barts look. — Amanda Theunissen
