Located in a renovated two-bedroom apartment on the ground
floor of an elegant Upper West Side
residential building, Restore Spa is a welcome contrast to some of the city’s
larger, more anonymous beauty destinations. At the tiny, well-designed space,
co-owner Albert Garcia and Spa Director Janis Chakler specialize in
restorative, anti-aging treatments, and attend to each client personally.
Visitors—primarily men and women over 30 from the neighborhood and from across
the park—often schedule time with Garcia and Chakler on the same afternoon as a
session across the hall at Longevity Lounge, home of celebrity nutritionist Oz
Garcia, who’s also the brother of Albert and co-owner of Restore. The spa’s
body treatments tend toward the vigorous and therapeutic; clients suffering
from tight muscles often opt for Clay Heat therapy, a 30-minute session where
hot clay packs are applied to the affected areas. Chakler—who earned a cult
following in San Francisco at her own skincare center—is best known for her
Really Radical facial, a decadent treatment that combats free radical damage
(public enemy #1 in the anti-aging field) and finishes with a cooling lavender
mask. Although the esthetician is keen on extractions, she ensures that all
clients leave looking hydrated and refreshed, not shiny, blotchy, or irritated.
