Since 1985, stylist and colorist Ann Minahan has presided over Riah (hair spelled backwards), a tiny, two-seat salon in Nolita. Other than an old-timey barber shop pole—a relic from the space’s former incarnation—the space is fairly inconspicuous to those who pass by on Mott Street. With only one other stylist and an assistant on board, Minahan, who has been doing hair for over 30 years in New York, has been building a steady clientele of well-known names and locals, an equal number of men and women, and boasts the ability to work with hair of all types and textures. Most notably, however, are the salon’s color offerings done with Robert Craig products, which are free of peroxide, ammonia, alcohol, or perfume.
NoteThough the address is on Spring Street, you’ll find the salon one door in from the Northwest corner of Spring and Mott Streets.
