After serving as a freelance stylist in Manhattan for more than fifteen years, Japanese-born Michio Shiramizu opened his own midtown shop, a salon-studio that crosses an eighties industrial vibe with touches of Tokyo. While his team does field the occasional request for a razor cut or artsy shag, the majority of time-strapped professionals who come here want fuss-free styles that look just as good in eight weeks as they do when leaving the salon. To achieve that low-maintenance effect, scissor-wielding stylists follow the natural hair growth, and scatter highlights across the head to call attention away from roots as they’re growing out. If you don’t want to pay for blow-drying ($40 and up), use the salon’s fully stocked styling stations at no extra charge. Between snip sessions, clients dip into Mingle to experience the signature spa scalp treatment—a 45-minute therapy that’s designed to be a “facial for the head.” Those seeking waxing, nail, skin-care, and massage treatments are referred to Advanced Skincare, the full-service day spa downstairs (it shares a staircase with the salon, but is otherwise unrelated.)
