This tiny storefront salon on a busy East Village block boasts four chairs and a fabulous reputation. A large mirror stretches across one wall so clients can watch their ‘do in the making and admire the funky, rotating works of art on the opposite wall. A wooden bench makes up a waiting area of sorts, built-in shelves offer a small selection of Fudge, Texture, Artec and MOP products, and two shampoo stations are tucked in back. Everything about this place says casual cool, from the eclectic mix of music to the stylists themselves, but the clientele isn’t limited to the East Village crowd; people come from all over the city and beyond for the precision, messy, and sculptural cuts, lovely color and highlights, and expert hair extensions. (Former clients include Madonna and Cyndi Lauper.) The hands-on approach of owners Mark D. and Lori Goldstein is one of the big pluses here. The stylist who cuts your hair will also wash, dry, and style it, so you never feel like you’ve been handed off to an endless number of assistants or limited to a certain amount of time with the person who’s supposed to be giving you a great coif.
