With a massive mural of a serene lake gracing the front wall, it’s impossible not to feel at peace in this small, cozy salon in the East Village. Appointments start with a consultation in one of six antique armchairs-turned-barbershop chairs, then things move on to a shampoo and a vigorous but incredibly relaxing head massage. The salon’s three founders, Yoko, Taiki, and Koshi, alternate between their Japan salon and this New York location, but supplement their New York staff with four other artistically minded stylists from Japan. Yoko also lassoed the talents of local Shea Butter manufacturer Dr. Amikole to create a custom moisturizing product for the salon. Jars of lavender- and rosemary-scented shea are both used and sold at Shizen, perfect for protecting against split ends or smoothing down frizz.
