The cheesiest book to hit the best-seller list in the early seventies, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, became the inspiration behind the name of this three-station West Village salon. Despite a change of ownership in the ensuing decades, the space remains true to its retro roots with a collection of sixties pop-art furniture. Chief hairstylist Shaun Cottle (a self-trained Washington native with platinum hair and a penchant for eyeliner) bought the space with Le Tigre’s Johanna Fateman in 2006, bringing on four other stylists touting training from Bumble & Bumble and Aveda. The team specializes in choppy, asymmetrical cuts and coloring that ranges from extreme to office-ready using Davines styling products and Redken dye.
