Living up to his name, Shalom Sharon helps clients make peace with their curly hair. Although his salon didn’t open until 2006, he actually found his calling years earlier, in his native Tel Aviv—first learning his trade in a high school beauty academy then finessing it as a women’s hairdresser in the Israeli Army. Once he landed in New York, Sharon’s scissor skills attracted swathes of editorial attention; plus he’s styled hair for designers like Anna Sui, Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen. Now settled into this small, mod East Village space, complete with red and orange-accented pod-like chairs, Sharon sees a regular brigade of curly-topped clients, who faithfully book him weeks in advance to help tame their strong-willed manes. Sharon’s cuts ($170) can be styled curly, straight or somewhere in between, and devotees say his cutting technique somehow defies frizz. Ringlet-free clients are also welcome to pop in for cuts, color and extensions.
