Profile
Wish you could get a haircut to go with those patent leather chaps? You’re in luck. Ricky’s, the Manhattan drugstore chain and one-stop shop for hair products, cosmetics, Halloween costumes, and penis piñatas, has added hair salon to its inventory. Shears Hustle & Blow, created by Ricky’s president Dominic Costello and celeb hairstylist Rick Pipino, was designed with the store’s young, downtown clientele in mind, and it specializes in fast, affordable cuts and “crazy” color. There are two locations: a two-chair studio in Ricky’s 13th Street store and a larger salon on Crosby Street, at the back of Ricky’s on lower Broadway. The five-chair salon’s playful décor feels just right—a two-tiered chandelier made of gold spray-painted hair dryers; portraits of real Ricky’s customers in all their pink-haired, tongue-pierced glory; and a D.J. booth are all present. Highlights, clip-on extensions, flat-ironing, and styling are all on the menu, and blowouts, which include a shampoo and head massage for $35, are among the most popular choices.
