As owners of Eastern Athletic Club, brothers Davide, Ken, and Mark Sferrazza wanted to expand on the already expansive sports club that their parents founded with George Hart in 1971. The 75,000-square-foot, four-floor, pool-, squash-, and racquetball-court-inclusive complex offered first-rate trainers and unprecedented programs; America’s first tennis leagues began here but massages were conducted in locker rooms. So in 1998 they opened Shibumi Spa at the Brooklyn Heights club (shibumi is Japanese for “complete” or “harmonious”), with the Metrotech location following soon after. The latter does only massages. At Clark Street, a private, dimly lit corridor on the club’s second floor reserves three rooms for Swedish, Shiatsu, sports, deep-tissue, reflexology, and aromatherapy massages; another room is used for body treatments, waxing, and facials. Skin treatments employ Decléor products and can be customized for men, backs, severe skin conditions, and on-the-go customers, who can forgo the 90-minute Deluxe facial for the 30-minute Express. Gym members get special rates on spa services while non-members are invited to work out in the club for the day, with complimentary access to the steam room, sauna, and a long list of classes. — Christine Ajudua
