Fact: Nicole Kidman depends on Sarah Choi to maintain her milky complexion. Choi grew up in her mom's nail salon and, after college, decided to make her own way in the world of cosmetology. Her classic facials soon attracted a strong following, which enabled her to open up Shija—Korean for let's relax—in a loft overlooking Union Square. Spacious treatment rooms, decorated with fragrant fresh-cut flowers and made more comfortable by soft linens and water pillows, line a hushed hallway. Four double-bedded rooms accommodate side-by-side treatments for mother-daughter days and couples' special occasions, while two steam rooms let clients unwind in privacy before or between treatments. In this calming environment, a team of twelve therapists perform an array of services. Specialties include sensitive skin-friendly organic waxing, acupressure and deep-tissue massages, and luxurious body treatments like the popular Crème Fraîche Wrap. But it's the classic facial that's the star attraction: Using Dermalogica products, as well as the latest microdermabrasion and photo-rejuvenation technology, Choi and her team get their clients' skin ready for the limelight—whether she's an Oscar-winner or not.
