Profile

Shizuka Bernstein and her husband, Dr. Robert M. Bernstein, are quite the dynamic dermatological duo: He’s the derm doc and she’s the esthetician behind the Shizuka New York day spa. Though Dr. Bernstein now specializes in hair transplants while his wife specializes in, among other things, hair removal, she got her start performing cosmetology services in his doctor’s office, and he still reviews her treatments and the medical research behind them. Offering a full menu of services, from manicures and pedicures to body wraps and massages, that employ both Japanese and Western techniques, Shizuka has really made its name with its unique, comprehensive facial treatment. Described by the esthetician as “a very, very thorough way to micromanage your skin,” the signature Microfacial combines a litany of methods with a special solution that loosens blackheads before the practitioner removes them with relatively little pain using a tiny dermatological tool rather than her fingers. The intimate, Zen-like spa is also known for anti-aging, lifting, and lightening treatments, which incorporate technologies like the Medilux Intense Pulse Light system and Gentle Waves LED low-intensity light therapy. Depilatory services include waxing, electrolysis, and laser hair removal; the spa’s combination of electrolysis and laser allows for more complete hair eradication than at spas offering just one or the other.  Shizuka sells Naturopathica and DCL skincare products as well as Bernstein’s own line, SHIZUKA NY, launched in 2005. Consisting of foaming and clay skin cleansers, skin freshener, and moisturizer, the products were developed in Japan and made with all-natural Japanese products, including water from Mt. Fuji.

I am a regular spa goer and Shizuka is one of several places I frequent. I started going to Shizuka in early 2005 am an avid fan of the Signature Anti-Aging Treatment Facial, which I receive twice a year in conjunction with GentleWaves Wrinkle Buster. The aestheticians, who are primarily Asian, are very thourough and gentle. They do take their time on facials and it is a relaxing experience. The rooms are just the right size, the lighting and background music is soft and soothing. I frequently regret the session has ended. The staff does not rush you out immediately following a treatment. You can spend as much time as you want sipping green tea and eating ginger cookies in the client post-treatment room, while wearing your bathrobe and straw slippers, courtesy of the spa. They give you a locker to put your clothes while you are undergoing treatment. The entire place has relaxing ambience with a Japanese theme- small waterfalls throughout the spa and soft, instrumental music. The staff is most professional and friendly. The prices are a bit high, but they are competitive by New York standards and the service is impecable. -- Christina Steiner, Queens, NY
