When it comes to pre-and post-natal exercise, there are two camps of women -- those who want support, and those who want to sweat. Spabébé featuring Maternal Fitness offers regimens for both, along with treatments to pamper pregnant bellies post-workout. Workshop, pilates and yoga sessions incorporate the Tupler Technique, a series of exercises created by Julie Tupler designed to strengthen abdominal muscles for more effective pushing during labor and better retention of core muscles after birth. Located on the fourth floor of a nondescript office building off Union Square, the white loft-like space bustles with staff and clients who greet each other by name. Two intimate studios house both group and private sessions and weekly drop-in classes, while three cozy treatment rooms boast white brick walls, sage-colored curtains and large mahogany-framed mirrors. Though full body scrubs, tired leg rubs and a moisturizing “Yummy Tummy” treatment are all on the menu, the most popular service by far is massage, performed on a standard table with an assortment of comfortable cushions to accommodate pregnant bodies. A small shop sells Mamma Mia balms and creams and the Canadian baby skincare line bébé by Fruits & Passion.
