This sunless-tanning spot is quite a departure from the carwash-like spray booths that blindly shellac every pasty client in a one-shade-fits-all orangey, streaky mess. Instead, inside this private, curtained setting, former sun worshipers, pale brides-to-be, alabaster actors, and other devotees confer individually with the tanning specialist on hand to decide which shade would provide the most complimentary—and believable—bronze. Like a St. Tropez mad scientist, the sprayologist then custom blends the color on the spot and pours it into a Super Soaker-like continuous spray gun. After donning a paper thong, clients are manually coated in an artificial splash of sun. The color, which shows up immediately rather than gradually, lasts about a week on the body, a little less on the face. Just be sure to exfoliate first at home to avoid blotchiness, as prep services aren’t offered here.
