Profile
Diane Bailey opened Tendrils Hair Spa back in 1987, when there were few-to-no local spots specializing in the care and styling of African-American and textured hair. Instead of hot-rolling, chemically treating, or adding extensions, Bailey and her staff advocate making the most of their client’s natural hair texture, mainly through braids, twists, coils, or locs. (Bailey’s even authored three books on the subject.) Her colorful storefront sees plenty of central Brooklyn’s Caribbean communities as well as natural hair fans—and kids, too—from all over the boroughs. Tendrils uses a variety of homemade pomades and hair oils in its treatments, including green tea and ginseng varieties; many are available for sale up front. While appointments are necessary—consult the website for care instructions prior to certain services—Bailey offers complimentary consultations for clients interested in a color or style change.
