Longtime Williamsburgers Bean Longo and Luisa Vieira met while they were both stylists at a local salon; in 2002, the ladies set out on their own to open the ultra-funky Beehive. The kitschy, Steel Magnolias-esque space—with its own parking lot, no less!—reflects the co-owners mutual admiration for all things retro: an old-time floor cone-dryer serves as the salon’s de fact logo, and vintage oil paintings, ukuleles, and other tchotchkes frame each of the six rose-print curtained stations. Specializing in textured cuts for curly hair, Beehive's predominantly tattooed and pierced stylists—divided into three price groups based on experience—all do double-duty on color, and are always game for dramatic experiments on the heads of neighborhood artists and edgy Manhattanites. Faux-hawks, urban mullets, and long-layered shag cuts abound, but more conservative looks are also professionally accommodated. Vieria stresses that all of her salon's cuts grow out excellently—a boon for penny-pinchers stretching the time between appointments. In addition to cut and color, essential oils with Fresh brand deep conditioning treatments are mixed at the Beehive spa down the street to tackle summer's split ends and winter's itchy scalps.

Beehive's education program offers assistants the chance to hone their skills on willing hair models, who get styled for discounted prices. Call for schedule.
