Profile
Timothy John opened the doors of his salon in early September of 2001. But after 9/11, police closed off his street to protect a sensitive MTA building next door. To cope, John and partner David Spangenthal, a Broadway actor, put the word out on the Great White Way, and soon his swivel chairs were filled with friends and colleagues. So began a symbiotic relationship between stage stars and stylists, and since then John has done a brisk business in coiffing for head shots, auditions, period pieces, and character color changes. Those not destined for the limelight can take advantage of the studio's high standards. Cuts start at a reasonable $60 for women, and stylists are meticulously trained by the master of the house for at least a year. The smallish space is simply decorated in copper-toned hues—multicolor metal mirrors provide the only focal point other than your freshly fashioned strands.
