A testament to its growing word-of-mouth reputation, Tosler Davis has expanded its tenth-floor space twice since opening in 1999. Founded by expert colorist Sean Davis and Brit stylist Alan Tosler, the salon has garnered a following among New York artists, with noteworthy names like Cecily Brown and Jessica Craig-Martin gracing its appointment books. Intimate and relaxed, the salon’s sun-drenched loft space holds three separate rooms for color, cutting, and styling, each decorated in muted, masculine colors, and adorned with works by talented regulars. Tosler, Davis, and their small team of pros all come from world-class chop shops, but their methods eschew the usual trend-setting protocol. Tosler and his stylists do both scissor and razor cuts, depending on the client’s hair type, while highlights are applied using foils or balayage (the French method of “sweeping” or painting hair strands) and can be applied simultaneously with single-process color. Between appointments, regulars can drop in for a free bang trim (or neck trim for men), and can also request a complimentary conditioning treatment fifteen minutes prior to scheduled appointments. The salon carries a rotating selection of niche products, like the coveted Japanese line Komenuka Bijin (revered for its natural softening ingredients) and the popular Terax and Aeto brands from Italy. — Sarah Walker
