L at First Ave.
Owners Janell Waddington, Julie Reale, and Kristiana Andrews worked together for years at Soon Beauty Lab before opening this laid-back, chatty salon in December 2008. The trio describes the décor as “kitschy, Rat Pack–era ski lodge,” referring to the forest-printed wallpaper, antler taxidermy, and tree-bark railing. Most everything here is vintage, including gold-rimmed mirrors, hanging light fixtures, and an old-school radio turned office desk (an eBay find). With only five stations, quarters are cozy. Shampooing is done at one of the two sinks downstairs, stationed near a red faux fireplace and a black leather-upholstered bar stocked with wine and tea. The main focus here is on funky cuts and coloring—with a specialty in shaping curly tresses—as well as shrink link, a heat-activated approach to extensions. The salon is also the only spot in the city to use Badass Hair, a line of products sporting a hot-pink skull-and-scissor-crossbones logo and packed with organic and botanical extracts.
