Profile

Fans of Meg Ryan’s iconic nineties shag need not invest in a visit to Sally Hershberger for the real thing—a convincing knockoff can be had just a stone’s throw from the Hudson. Vidal Sassoon-trained Younghee Kim and her similarly pedigreed stylists and colorists have built a reputation carving up the bed-heady, razored look for a surprisingly mature, well-heeled crowd, while victims of untamable frizz also turn to the salon for its gentle Japanese straightening and thermal reconditioning services. A smallish salon with a Far East feel, Younghee counts across-the-street neighbors Christy Turlington and Ed Burns among its clients. The sparse, whitewashed space, potted plants, and hot tea served in ornate Oriental sets lend the same stoic vibe as a trendy sushi house. However, the fashion-forward cuts and modern surroundings are in stark contrast to the salon’s cumbersome deep-conditioning treatments, which are often strongly suggested by the staff; Younghee’s method, involving hot-oil capsules and a space-age helmet with tentacle-like attachments, produces a far less dramatic result than you’re led to expect. The full range of René Furterer products, which are stocked in a tiny reception nook, are probably a better bet to restore hair’s health.
