The Spa at Chelsea
Piers offers a mini-vacation from Manhattan.
Perched at the end of Pier 60: easy to get to, and yet, removed from
the city; the mauve-and-lavender-walled retreat is situated within a
150,000-square-foot megagym. Serene staff members welcome the weary with Elixir
herbal teas and tonics, and mani/pedi clients unwind and watch the river run by
as technicians apply flawless coats of polish. Estheticians use Dermalogica’s
cruelty-free products in a range of relaxing facials, from the 25-minute
express to the 80-minute anti-aging, while seaweed wraps, thermal mud masks,
and other effective body treatments erase outward signs of hustle and bustle. A
full range of standard spa services; from athletic massages to upper
lip waxing are expertly performed but what makes the granite-floored
facility truly unique is its location. And it’s affiliation: Use of the Sports
Center is complimentary with the purchase of $75 worth of services, so, in
between or after treatments, spa goers can take a yoga class, soak in the
whirlpool, climb a rock wall, do some laps on the track, or tan themselves on
the sun deck, which overlooks the Hudson. — Eve Gerber

I knew going into this spa day that it wasnt going to be the most relaxing spa day, after all the spa is in a gym, but if the services were better it maybe wouldnt have been so bad. It must have been my massage therapists first day on the job. The room was freezing, my bed warmer was not on, her breath was horrible, she didnt flow. Then my facial, which was the complete opposite of relaxing. After having product thrown on my face, which by the way the esthetician wore latex gloves throughout the whole service, she put no effort into trying to be quiet in tidying up the room. I was lying with a mask over my face and eyes while she was clinking away, filling her steamer, hitting the bed, washing her bowls and dropping bottles. Then when I went to check out they overcharged me. When I pointed it out they didnt know how to fix it, the girls were new. Meanwhile outside, all the therapists from the day were waiting to pick up their gratuities constantly peeking over the frosted glass to see if I had left or not.
My sister is getting married in April and, of course, I wanted to throw her a party to celebrate her engagement. She loves spa treatments and the Spa at Chelsea Piers seemed to be the perfect location and environment for the party. While other spas tend to rush guests in and out because of a lack of space, the Spa at Chelsea Piers provided an entirely refreshing experience. We all received complimentary use of the amazing Sports Center, a locker for the day and access to a steam room, sauna and hot tub. There were 5 of us in total and we spent the day enjoying the Sports Center, basking in the indulgence of our mani-pedis and relaxing in the sauna. If you want to pamper yourself (and your sister!), I highly recommend the Spa at Chelsea Piers.
