Profile
Forget the velvet ropes. When the California-based Kimpton hotel chain bought the dowdy Doral Park Avenue in Murray Hill in 2003, it vowed to create a boutique hotel that felt both exclusive and welcoming. Jeffrey Bilhuber, who has designed spaces for David Bowie, Anna Wintour, and the late Peter Jennings, was brought in to up the hipster ante. The result: an elegant property featuring 205 olive- and wheat-hued rooms with wall-mounted flat screen TVs, silk and wool blankets, Hammacher Schlemmer candelas, and mahogany headboards slanted back a few degrees for easy bedtime reading. Guests can visit the lobby nightly for complimentary wine receptions, or hit the town knowing that Fluffy will be taken care of by the hotel’s pet-friendly staff.
