Profile

Created as a younger, wallet-friendly version of the W brand, Aloft hotels feature many of the same components as their big sisters: thumping music (and sometimes a live D.J.) in the lobby, tech-savvy staffers (who are happy to send suggestions or directions to your smartphone), and quirky design touches. This downtown Brooklyn location opened in June 2011, and while the 176 rooms are on the small side, they feature comfy beds, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, along with bulk-size Bliss bath amenities in the (no-tub) showers. As with all Alofts, the services and amenities are streamlined—no slippers, evening turndown, or spa, for example—but you'll find most needs covered. In lieu of a full restaurant, there's the 24-hour re:Fuel snack shop stocking gourmet nibbles, sandwiches, drinks, and, in the morning, freshly made breakfast wraps. There's also a small bar-lounge and a pool table in the lobby, a basic exercise room on the mezzanine, and a sun deck that connects to a swimming pool shared by Aloft and the Sheraton next door. The two hotels also share a rooftop club that boasts 360-degree views of the borough and beyond.

Pros

Central Brooklyn location near several subway lines; small swimming pool; rooftop bar with views; relaxed vibe; free Wi-Fi.

Cons
The immediate area is mainly home to chain stores and fast-food places; service is friendly, but spotty.
