Re-launched in the fall of 2004, Affinia 50 (previously Plaza Fifty) looks and feels inviting, warm, and modern. A waterfall in the small lobby originates in the second-floor "club room," a funky lounge with retro furniture arranged around a fireplace and large plasma-screen TV. Though there is no in-house restaurant, continental breakfast and complimentary wine and cheese are served in the lounge. Formerly residential, the building was converted into a hotel in 1980, which may explain why the 210 rooms are unusually spacious. Quarters include cozy pull-out couches, stainless steel nightstands, and queen or king-size triple-sheeted beds with oversized backboards. The 27” and 32” TV’s are not flat-screen, but the large desks are equipped with ergonomic chairs, high-speed Internet access, cordless phones, and electronic safes. Heavy on the competing patterns and textures, the overall room interiors are not as chic and sophisticated as they could be, but they are comfortable.
ProsSizeable rooms with all new furnishings and Internet access; full-service business center and fitness room.
Cons
No restaurant or bar, though comp wine and cheese are available in the communal "club room."
A Guide to the New Hotel Glut
There’s never been more lodging here, and the rooms have never looked this good.
