Profile

In 1991, landlords Larry Turk and Fergus O'Brien grew tired of renting to unreliable tenants, so they converted their walk-up building into a hotel, starting with just one of the building’s 550-square-foot studio apartments and eventually following suit with three more. They decorated the handsome 1891 limestone townhouse in a style reminiscent of a country inn (hence the name), with thickly carpeted hallways leading to rooms outfitted with four-poster beds, fireplaces, and quirky antiques. But the hotel also provides an authentic taste of apartment life: Clusters of delivery menus and complimentary copies of the week’s Time Out New York are unmistakably unique to the Big Apple, as is the wood patio off apartment No. 6, with its bird's-eye views of the neighbors’ backyards. The cramped barbecues and basketball hoops aren’t especially picturesque, but just like panhandlers on the corner and neighbors sorting their recyclables, it’s all part of the experience.

Pros

Comfortable apartments with full kitchenettes—located close to grocery stores and takeout restaurants—allow guests to live like New Yorkers.

Cons
Parties larger than two and children under 12 are not allowed, though most rooms have pull-out couches so non-couples can stay together.

Note
Walk-ins are not accepted. All guests must make reservations ahead of time.

Children
No children under 12 allowed.
