The Hotel Grand Union is a true workhorse as far as hotels go. Although each of the 96 rooms at this clean and no-nonsense family-run hotel offer (somewhat droopy) beds, forget about in-room extras like Internet access or even hair dryers. (Guests are even handed a TV remote upon check in.) The fluorescent-lit lobby glows like a dentist’s office, complete with watercolor paintings by famed Maine artist David Dewey. While there are no restaurants or lounges to be found here, there is a little coffee shop serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The tradeoff to barebones lodgings, of course, means more cash—and incentive—to explore all that lies outside the hotel’s door.Pros
Inexpensive and centrally located.
Sterile and unattractive, it's a bit like staying overnight in a dentist's office.
