Profile

The Chelsea location of this wallet-friendly chain is little more than a space for visitors to store their belongings. Soft brown couches and earth-toned walls give the lobby an unexpected Zen feel, but less thought clearly went into designing the 144 small, bland-colored guest rooms, each of which comes with a desk, a TV cabinet, and not much else. The Hampton skimps on amenities, too: Room service is replaced with delivery menus, and only breakfast is served in the ground-floor café. Yet since the rooms are clean (hence functional), you won’t dread returning to them from the buzzing Chelsea neighborhood that surrounds you.

Pros

For tourists looking to visit more than just the typical museum circuit, the Chelsea art galleries are only a short walk away.

Cons
Guests staying in the building’s back rooms get unappealing views of nearby brick walls and fire escapes. You’ll need a room above the eighth floor (there are nineteen altogether) to have a view of downtown Manhattan.
