Profile

Opened in 2009, this chain option is located a short walk from Port Authority and Times Square. And location is the main draw here, as the place is otherwise solid, but pretty basic. The 210 nonsmoking rooms are spread out over 36 floors, and come with either one king or two double beds; it's about the same square footage for each, so the double bed rooms are an especially tight fit. Thanks to the building's height, most rooms do have some sort of city view (and enjoy some sunlight), and all have flat-panel cable TVs, small work desks, and free WiFi. The décor is classic Holiday Inn—modular and brown—but the sheets are crisp, and you can choose between firm and soft pillow options. Downstairs, there's a small lobby manned by helpful front-desk staffers and a concierge; there are also two Internet-ready computers here for guest use. In the back of the first floor, you'll find a complimentary breakfast buffet each morning (featuring both cold items and hot stuff like biscuits and eggs), as well as free coffee and tea throughout the day. Guests can use the fitness center at the next-door Candlewood Suites—a sister to the Holiday Inn Express—or buy discounted passes to a nearby gym.

Pros

Close to Times Square; free breakfast; free wired and wireless Internet.

Cons
Small rooms; basic amenities and facilities; no on-site gym.
