Profile

Located on a quiet residential block in Morningside Heights, the Morningside Inn is equal parts hotel and hostel. The hostel part is immediately apparent upon entering the dingy lobby, which is reminiscent of a dorm circa 1988. The small, clean and private budget rooms ($75-$90) feature basic amenities and come with shared bathrooms and kitchens, mini-fridges, phones and ceiling fans, but no air conditioners. A $20 bill goes a long way at this hotel, buying a more "upscale" room with private bathrooms, cable TV, daily maid service, data port phones and yes, air conditioners. The Inn also offers apartment-style options, complete with larger kitchens and enough space to comfortably sleep five. While it won't win any design or style awards, the spartanly decorated lodging is a solid bet for those looking for a place to crash without crashing their budget.

Pros

Basic standards of cleanliness and comfort on the cheap.

Cons

The experience varies considerably from one room to the next, and the shared bathrooms are often in poor shape.
