With noticeable stains on the chairs and yellowing bathtubs, the Portland Square won't win any awards for cleanliness, but it's not you're-better-off-sleeping-on-the-Q-train repugnant either. Situated just north of Times Square, the hotel attracts a primarily young clientele—international travelers or college kids on strict budgets. Guests can stay in a dorm room-sized single with a bathroom down the hall for $99, or upgrade to a standard-sized room with a private bathroom for a little more. All rooms have a phone, air conditioning, and a sink in the corner. While there are no mini-bars, bathrobes or luxurious amenities, the lobby has wireless Internet access, and lockers for storing luggage on check-out day help compensate for the hotel's yard sale-like decor. Travelers in search of a deal may want to snatch this one up—stains and all.
