Profile
When it opened in 1905, the ladies-only Martha Washington was a place where single women — including emerging starlets like Louise Brooks and Veronica Lake — could safely reside while making their way in the big city. Since ditching that aspect in the late 1990s, the Renaissance-revival-style building has housed a series of indie hotels, some for just a year or two, but the most recent incarnation — officially launched in fall 2016 — feels like the real deal. Now part of the SBE hotel group (which includes the SLS, Morgan’s, and the Redbury brands), the 265-room spot features warm, comfortable décor; public spaces lined with oversize vintage photos; and rooms outfitted with upgraded linens, boho-chic textiles, eclectic art, and playful nods to its history like Bluetooth speakers that look like gramophones. Owing to the historic structure, rooms vary in shape and size, don’t have notable views, and run small. Opt for a Park Avenue King or one-bedroom suite for more space. A small gym as well as lovely meeting and function spaces (including a terrace) round out the facilities. The biggest perk: on-site dining at Marta, restaurateur Danny Meyer’s take on the Roman pizzeria. The lobby restaurant is always buzzing, but hotel guests can enjoy the full menu (including breakfast) in a quiet back lounge — and even get Marta-made room service. Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality has plans to open two more restaurants in the back of the hotel, further making it a dining destination.
Pros
Free Wi-Fi and morning coffee; dining and room service from the top-rated Marta; pets are welcome (and treated to adorable amenities).
Cons
Some rooms are on the small side; no spa; basic gym, but passes are available to NY Sports Club locations.
Claims to Fame
Back when this was a women’s hotel, guests included stars like Veronica Lake and Louise Brooks.
