After a renovation in 2007, this once-seedy budget hotel has cleaned up considerably. TVs are no longer relics from the 70s, bathrooms are all private and clean (if miniscule), and maid service is standard. Unfortunately, flimsy wood furnishings and ubiquitous earth tones still make the St. Marks look like a glorified motel. Basic amenities, like an elevator, are lacking. There’s also no attempt at a cheap-chic aesthetic, like at nearby Hotel 17. But its prime downtown location and extraordinarily low rates are enough to attract budget-minded twentysomethings looking to do some bar-hopping and clubbing. And while Third Avenue and St. Marks Place might be one of the city’s noisiest corners at night, odds are, if you’re staying here, you’re not looking for a quiet night.

Such low prices are truly rare in New York for anything nicer than a hostel, and the location is great for those who want to play in the East Village or LES rather than heading uptown.

The St. Marks lacks many amenities you’ll find nearly everywhere else, so it’s still pretty rudimentary, even after the renovations.
