This Chicago-based brand made the leap to New York in September 2010, building a 20-floor, organic-inspired property from the ground up. The aesthetic is distinctly modern, from the third-floor Sky lobby to the 114 guest rooms, all of which feature reclaimed wood flooring, eco-friendly bedding, and a floor-to-ceiling glass wall protected by a remote-controlled privacy screen. In-room amenities include iPod docking stations, greenery from Air Plants, and bath products from the organic line Harmonic. City views from the higher floors are stunning, especially in the Penthouse Loft, a 16th-floor, 1,300-square-foot apartment-style room designed by Dutch architect Piet Boon. Jimmy, the rooftop pool bar and lounge, is surprisingly mellow, and boasts a fireplace and artisanal cocktails from the team behind Hotel Griffou. An extra, service-oriented touch: complimentary bicycles and iPads loaded with customized dining and shopping guides are available from the concierge.
ProsDesign standout; stunning views; rooftop lounge.
Cons
While street noise is effectively muted, floor-to-ceiling glass windows make it impossible to cancel out all city intrusions.
A Guide to the New Hotel Glut
